The RIBA Forgotten Spaces Ideas competition seeks out redundant spaces and invites proposals for their regeneration.

Our entry focused on the roundabout at the bottom of Holland Park Avenue that features a Thames Water surge pipe and an access chamber to the Thames Water ringmain.

Having visited the roundabout, one of the main vehicle routes into West London, we were struck at how large it is. We proposed to open up the existing underpass, creating access to the central roundabout space, and a public amphitheatre park for locals to use at lunchtimes. The park featured a water pond, where the water level could be raised or lowered depending on the seasons, all surrounded by an over-sized hedge.

Our entry, entitled ‘a bit of peace and quiet’, and was shortlisted and exhibited at Somerset House in 2012.
