THE LITTLE HALL IS AWARDED TWO RIBA AWARDS | APRIL 16

De Rosee Sa won two RIBA Awards for The Little Hall, at Prestwood Infant School in Buckinghamshire.

RIBA SOUTH AWARD 2016 & RIBA SOUTH SMALL PROJECT OF THE YEAR 2016

‘This project is a joy: rich in narrative and engaging both children and adults. It is well detailed, beautifully executed and inspiring. The architects approached the school when they found out that Portacabins were being proposed for the dining facilities – they thought that they could achieve a better solution on a comparable budget and they have pulled out every stop to achieve this. There has been a terrific rapport between an enlightened head teacher, a dedicated architect and a great builder. This is a very forward thinking and enthusiastic response to the brief, which enhances considerably the built environment in which it is sited.

Three aspects made Little Hall stand out. The first is the provision of a building that inspires the schoolchildren and the local community; the second is the way in which this building inspires them; and the third is the use of prefabricated materials where possible and simple detailing to reduce the labour and waste in order to meet the school’s tight budget.

The materials used are clever, economical, colourful and robust. The timber-panelled walls and power-floated floor have a tactile feel. The windows are well-considered with low-level window seats for small children to gather in groups.

This is a clever building that achieves a great deal on a small budget and offers great value for money.’
